Matthew 5.12
10 Blessed are those who
are persecuted for righteousness'
sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you
when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you
falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly
glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so
they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
- They were to rejoice and be glad at the great reward they would receive in heaven because they were reviled, persecuted, and maligned for Christ’s sake.
Acts 11.23
20 But some of them were
men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, preaching
the Lord Jesus. 21 And the hand of the Lord
was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord. 22 Then news of these things came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch. 23 When he
came and had seen the grace of God, he
was glad, and
encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the
Lord.
- Barnabas was glad when he saw the grace of God demonstrated by a great number of the Hellenist believed and turned to the Lord
Acts 13.48
46 Then Paul and Barnabas
grew bold and said, "It was necessary that the word of God should be
spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of
everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us: 'I
have set you as a light to the Gentiles, That you should be for salvation to
the ends of the earth.' " 48 Now
when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified
the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life
believed.
- The gentiles were glad when they heard the Word of God was to be preached to them (in addition to the Jews).
Acts 15.31
22 Then it pleased the
apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own
company to Antioch
with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas who was also named Barsabas, and Silas,
leading men among the brethren. 23 They wrote this letter by them:
“The apostles, the
elders, and the brethren, To the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria,
and Cilicia: Greetings. … 28 …For it seemed good to
the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these
necessary things: 29 that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things
strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you
will do well. Farewell.
30 So when they were sent
off, they came to Antioch;
and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the letter.
31 When they had read it, they rejoiced over its encouragement.
- The believers in Antioch rejoiced because the letter from the elders in Jerusalem was encouraging.
Romans 5.2
1 Therefore, having been
justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through
whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that
tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance,
character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not
disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the
Holy Spirit who was given to us.
- The believer is admonished to keep on rejoicing because of their hope of the glory of God being accomplished in their lives.
Romans 5.11
9 Much more then, having
now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death
of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
11 And not
only that, but we also rejoice in God
through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the
reconciliation.
- In addition to being reconciled and saved, we rejoice “in God,” or in being reconciled to Him.
Romans 14.17
15 Yet if your brother is
grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy
with your food the one for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore do not let
your good be spoken of as evil; 17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but
righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
18 For he who serves Christ in these things is
acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 Therefore let us pursue
the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.
- The Kingdom of God is about joy (and peace and righteousness) in the Holy Spirit.
- Joy in the Holy Spirit is one of the things that makes us acceptable to God and approved by men.
Romans 15.32
30 Now I beg you, brethren,
through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you
strive together with me in prayers to God for me, 31 that I may be delivered from those in Judea who do not believe, and
that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, 32 that I
may come to you with joy by the will of
God, and may be refreshed together with you. 33 Now the God of peace be
with you all. Amen.
- Paul’s joy would be prompted by deliverance from those in Judea who didn’t believe and his service being acceptable to the saints in Jerusalem.
- Paul’s joy would be in the context of his return to and refreshment with the saints in Rome.
Romans 16.19
18 For those who are such
do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words
and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple. 19 For
your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad
on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple
concerning evil. 20 And the God of peace
will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be
with you. Amen.
- Paul was glad because the Roman believer’s obedience had become known to all men.
1 Corinthians 1.20-2.8
21 Now He who establishes
us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a
guarantee. 23 Moreover I call God as
witness against my soul, that to spare you I came no more to Corinth. 24 Not that we have
dominion over your faith, but are fellow
workers for your joy; for by faith you
stand.
2.1 But I determined this
within myself, that I would not come again to you in sorrow. 2 For if I make you
sorrowful, then who is he who makes me glad but the one who
is made sorrowful by me? 3 And I wrote this very thing to you, lest, when I came, I should have
sorrow over those from whom I ought to have joy,
having confidence in you all that my joy is the joy of you all. 4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you, with
many tears, not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love
which I have so abundantly for you. 5 But if anyone has caused
grief, he has not grieved me, but all of you to some extent--not to be too
severe. 6 This punishment which
was inflicted by the majority is sufficient for such a man, 7 so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him,
lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. 8 Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him.
- The Corinthian’s joy was a goal of Paul’s efforts.
- Feeling joy when a sinning brother is restored.
1 Corinthians 12.26
…But God composed the body, having given
greater honor to that part which lacks it, 25 that there should be no
schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.
26 And if one member
suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.
- Believers (part of the body) rejoice when other believers are honored.
1 Corintians 16.17
17 I am glad
about the coming of Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus, for what was
lacking on your part they supplied. 18 For they refreshed my
spirit and yours. Therefore acknowledge such men.
- Paul was glad about the three men coming to assist him.
2 Corinthians 7.13
12 Therefore, although I
wrote to you, I did not do it for the sake of him who had done the wrong, nor
for the sake of him who suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight
of God might appear to you. 13 Therefore we have been
comforted in your comfort. And we rejoiced exceedingly
more for the joy of Titus, because his spirit has
been refreshed by you all. 14 For if in anything I have boasted to him about you, I am not
ashamed. But as we spoke all things to you in truth, even so our boasting to
Titus was found true.
- Joy was the result of the Corinthians refreshing Titus’ spirit.
- The rejoiced when Paul saw Titus’ joy that was caused by the Corinthians refreshing him.
2 Corinthians
8:2
1 Moreover, brethren, we
make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia:
2 that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the
riches of their liberality. 3 For I bear witness that
according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely
willing, 4 imploring us with much
urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to
the saints. 5 And not only as we had
hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will
of God.
- The Corinthians joy (and their poverty) prompted generous spirit in spite of afflictions.
2 Corinthians 13.9
5 Examine yourselves as to
whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that
Jesus Christ is in you?--unless indeed you are disqualified. 6 But I trust that you will know that we are not disqualified. 7 Now I pray to God that you do no evil, not that we should appear
approved, but that you should do what is honorable, though we may seem
disqualified. 8 For we can do nothing
against the truth, but for the truth. 9 For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong. And
this also we pray, that you may be made complete.
- The sense seems to be that Paul was glad his team appeared weak (like Christ during His earthly ministry).
Philippians 1.18
15 Some indeed preach
Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from good will: 16 The former preach Christ
from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains;
17 but the latter out of love, knowing that I
am appointed for the defense of the gospel. 18 What
then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice. 19 For I know that this
will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the
Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my earnest
expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness,
as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or
by death.
- Paul rejoiced when Christ was preached.
- Paul rejoiced in the expectation that he would Christ would be magnified in his body.
Philipians 1.25
24 Nevertheless to remain
in the flesh is more needful for you. 25 And
being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all
for your progress and joy of faith, 26 that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my
coming to you again.
- The joy that was prompted or sustained by their faith.
Philippians 2:2
1 Therefore if there is
any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the
Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same
love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done
through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem
others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out
not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
- “My joy” seems to be a reference to Paul’s aspirations for the Philippians.
- Paul seems to indicate that if the Philippians did these certain things, his joy would be full.
Philippians 2.16, 17
14 Do all things without
complaining and disputing, 15 that you may become
blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked
and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding
fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of
Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain. 17 Yes, and if I am being
poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.
- Paul looks forward to the day of Christ when he would rejoice that his efforts for the Philippians would not have been in vain.
- Paul is glad and rejoices to “pour” himself out in the sacrifice and service for the faith or the Philippians.
Philippians 3.1
1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. For me to write the same things to you
is not tedious, but for you it is safe. 2 Beware of dogs, beware
of evil workers, beware of the mutilation! 3 For we
are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in
Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh, 4 though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks
he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: 5 circumcised the eighth
day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews;
concerning the law, a Pharisee; 6 concerning zeal,
persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law,
blameless.
- The were to rejoice in Jesus Christ (and His provision for salvation) and not in things they had done to be blameless according to the righteousness of the law.
Philippians 4:1
20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly
wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to
His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue
all things to Himself.
1 Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord,
beloved. 2 I implore
Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. 3 And I urge you also, true
companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement
also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life. 4 Rejoice
in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be known to
all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and
supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
- The Philippians were a source of joy (and crown) for Paul.
- The immediate context following suggests verse one the difficulty these two had getting along was a blemish.
- A command to rejoice in the Lord.
Colossians
1.24
24 I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in
the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God
which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, 26 the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but
now has been revealed to His saints.
- Paul rejoiced in his sufferings. Two reasons seem to be associated with his rejoicing here. First, is that he would fill up in his flesh what was lacking in the afflictions of Christ. Second, was that he could suffer for the Church.
1
Thessalonians 1.6
5 For our gospel did not
come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much
assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake. 6 And you became followers of us and of the
Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the
Holy Spirit, 7
so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and
Achaia who believe.
- The joy that the Holy Spirit gave them when they received the Word in spite of much affliction.
1 Thessalonians 2:19-20
14 For you, brethren,
became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea
in Christ Jesus. For you also suffered the same things from your own
countrymen, just as they did from the Judeans, 15 who killed
both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they do
not please God and are contrary to all men, 16 forbidding us to speak
to the Gentiles that they may be saved, so as always to fill up the measure of
their sins; but wrath has come upon them to the uttermost. 17 But we, brethren, having been taken away from you for a short time in
presence, not in heart, endeavored more eagerly to see your face with great
desire. 18 Therefore we wanted to
come to you--even I, Paul, time and again--but Satan hindered us. 19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of
rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming? 20 For you are our glory and joy.
- The Thessalonians would bring joy to Paul when they were in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ at His coming.
- The Thessalonians were a reason for Paul to glory and to have joy.
1 Thessalonians 3:9
6 But now that Timothy has
come to us from you, and brought us good news of your faith and love, and that
you always have good remembrance of us, greatly desiring to see us, as we also
to see you-- 7 therefore, brethren, in
all our affliction and distress we were comforted concerning you by your faith.
8 For now we live, if you stand fast in the
Lord. 9 For what thanks can we render to God for you,
for all the joy
with which we rejoice for your sake before our God, 10 night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face and perfect
what is lacking in your faith? 11 Now may our God and
Father Himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you. 12 And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another
and to all, just as we do to you, 13 so that He may establish
your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of
our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints.
- The news of the Thessalonian’s faith and love and that they stood fast in the Lord caused Paul’s team to joy and rejoice.
1
Thessalonians 5:16
15 See that no one renders
evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and
for all. 16 Rejoice always,
17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus
for you.
- A command to rejoice in the context of doing good for all and prayer.
2 Timothy 1.
3 I thank God, whom I
serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I
remember you in my prayers night and day, 4 greatly desiring to see
you, being mindful of your tears, that I
may be filled with joy, 5 when I call to remembrance the genuine faith
that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother
Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.
- The genuine faith in Timothy that was first in his grandmother and mother filled Paul with joy.
Philemon 1.7
4 I thank my God, making
mention of you always in my prayers, 5 hearing of your love and
faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints, 6 that the sharing of your faith may become effective by the
acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. 7 For we have great joy
and consolation in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been
refreshed by you, brother.
- Joy was a result of Philemon’s love and his ministry of refreshing the hearts of the saints.
Philemon 1.20
18 But if he has wronged
you or owes anything, put that on my account. 19 I, Paul, am writing with
my own hand. I will repay--not to mention to you that you owe me even your own
self besides. 20 Yes,
brother, let me have joy from you in the Lord;
refresh my heart in the Lord. 21 Having confidence in
your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.
- Philemon’s obedience to generously accept and restore Onesimous would bring Paul joy.
- This seems to be of a personal and individual nature.
Hebrews 12.2
1 Therefore we also, since
we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every
weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance
the race that is set before us, 2 looking
unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy
that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat
down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who
endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and
discouraged in your souls. 4 You have not yet
resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin.
- The joy that would result from being seated at the right hand of God after enduring the cross.
1 Peter 1 6, 8
3 Blessed be the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten
us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
dead, 4
to an inheritance incorruptible and
undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to
be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if
need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold
that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and
glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8 whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 receiving the end of your faith--the salvation of your souls.
- They rejoiced even in the midst of grievous trials that the power of God through faith kept them for an incorruptible inheritance in heaven.
- They rejoiced that their faith may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
- The thought of receiving the end of their faith caused them to rejoice.
1 Peter 4.13
12 Beloved, do not think it
strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange
thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake
of Christ's sufferings, that when
His glory is revealed, you may also be
glad with exceeding joy.
14 If you are reproached for the name of
Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.
- They rejoiced that their trials caused them to partake in Christ’s sufferings to the end that they would be glad when His glory was revealed.
- They rejoiced that Spirit of glory and of God rested upon them and Christ was glorified when they were reproached for Him.
1 John 1
4 And these things we
write to you that your joy may be full. 5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you,
that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we
lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the
light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood
of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
- The message of the book of 1 John would help them to have full joy.
3 John
3 For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the
truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth. 4 I have no greater joy
than to hear that my children walk in truth.
- Hearing and knowing that his children walked in the truth gave him as much joy as anything else.
Jude 24-25
24 Now to Him who is able
to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless before
the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, 25 To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be
glory and majesty, Dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen.
- The feeling that accompanies Christ presenting a believer being faultless before the presence of God’s glory.
Revelation
12.12
10 Then I heard a loud
voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of
our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our
brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the
Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to
the death.
12 Therefore rejoice, O
heavens, and you who dwell in them!
Woe to
the inhabitants of the earth and the sea!
For the
devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a
short time."
- The heavens and their inhabitants are commanded to rejoice because Satan’s time was short.
Revelation
18:20
19 They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing, and
saying, 'Alas, alas, that great
city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! For in
one hour she is made desolate.' 20 Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets, for God has
avenged you on her!"
- The Apostles and prophets where exhorted to rejoice because vengeance was taken on “that great city” for them.
Revelation
19.7
5 Then a voice came from
the throne, saying, "Praise our God, all you His servants and those who
fear Him, both small and great!" 6 And I heard, as it were,
the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of
mighty thunderings, saying, "Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!
7 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage
of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready." 8 And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and
bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. 9 Then he said to me, "Write: 'Blessed
are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!' “And he said to me, "These are the true
sayings of God."
- Gladness and rejoicing were in order because the marriage of the Lamb had come.
