AUTHORSHIP
A. Internal evidence
• “The disciple whom Jesus loved…” This disciple is a significant character in the book (13:23; 19:26; 20:2; 21:7, 20).
• The apostle John is mentioned throughout the Synoptics as a significant character.
• The apostle John is NEVER mentioned (by name, that is) in the fourth gospel (the disciple whom Jesus loved.
John 1:14 "we beheld" The author was beholder, eyewitness
John 1:6,15,19, etc. Calls John the Baptist just "John"
John 21:24-25 "this is the disciple… who wrote these things"
b. External Evidence
n Manuscripts have “According to John”
n Polycarp (70-160 AD) was a disciple of Apostle John; Irenaeus (130-200 AD) was a disciple of Polycarp. Irenaeus said the apostle John wrote this gospel.
“We have learned from none others the plan of our salvation, than from those through whom the Gospel has come down to us, which they did at one time proclaim in public, and, at a later period, by the will of God, handed down to us in the Scriptures, to be the ground and pillar of our faith. For it is unlawful to assert that they preached before they possessed “perfect knowledge,” as some do even venture to say, boasting themselves as improvers of the apostles. For, after our Lord rose from the dead, [the apostles] were invested with power from on high when the Holy Spirit came down [upon them], were filled from all [His gifts], and had perfect knowledge: they departed to the ends of the earth, preaching the glad tidings of the good things [sent] from God to us, and proclaiming the peace of heaven to men, who indeed do all equally and individually possess the Gospel of God. Matthew also issued a written Gospel among the Hebrews in their own dialect, while Peter and Paul were preaching at Rome, and laying the foundations of the Church. After their departure, Mark, the disciple and interpreter of Peter, did also hand down to us in writing what had been preached by Peter. Luke also, the companion of Paul, recorded in a book the Gospel preached by him. Afterwards, John, the disciple of the Lord, who also had leaned upon His breast, did himself publish a Gospel during his residence at Ephesus in Asia.” (Against Heresies 3.1.1)
n all patristic writers after Irenaeus do not question apostolic authorship, criticism must give way to historical probability. -- https://bible.org/seriespage/4-gospel-john-introduction-argument-outline
n Justin Martyr
• Mentions the "memoirs of the apostles, called Gospels"
• Calls Jesus "the Logos" in Dialogue with Trypho, 127-28.
• Cites John 3:5 in Apology 61:
o "Except ye be born again, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven"
• In Dialogue 91, explains serpent as Jesus does in John 3:14.

n Independence from the synoptic tradition coupled with early and widespread acceptance by the church. The fact that over 90% of the material in this gospel is unique to itself, coupled with its early acceptance by the church, argues very strongly that it was authored by some authority. This, coupled with the further fact that John was widely employed in early gnostic circles yet was not thereby abandoned by the orthodox, argues quite compellingly that all quarters recognized its authority. A work not done by an apostle would hardly have met such a reception. --Daniel Wallace https://bible.org/seriespage/4-gospel-john-introduction-argument-outline

WHEN – WHERE
WHEN—60-100 AD and probably closer to 100 AD
1. P52—the earliest fragment for any NT book—contains portions of John 18:31-33 and 37-38 and is to be dated as early as 100 CE5 (to 150AD); and the Papyrus Egerton 2, which is to be dated at about the same time, draws on both John and synoptics for its material.6 Although the early patristic hints and the early papyri do not explicitly affirm Johannine authorship, they do illustrate its early and widespread use… Daniel B. Wallace
2. Eusebius identifies John as the last Gospel written after Matthew, Mark and Luke: “The three gospels which had been written down before were distributed to all including himself.”7 This would support a later time for John more than an earlier one.
WHERE--uncertian
. Irenaeus8 and Eusebius9 affirm that John wrote from Ephesus where he had settled after the Roman war under Titus (AD 66-70)
Life of the Apostle John
· He was probably the younger of the sons of Zebedee (Matthew 4:21) and Salome (Matthew 27:56; compare Mark 15:40), and was born at Bethsaida. His father was apparently a man of some wealth (compare Mark 1:20; Luke 5:3; John 19:27).
Matthew 4:21 Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them,
40 There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was
2. and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses,
3. and Salome;
56 Among which was
2. and Mary the mother of James and Joses,
3. and the mother of Zebedee's children.
Mark 1.20 And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.
· Jesus again called them (Matthew 4:21; Luke 5:1-11), and they left all and permanently attached themselves to the company of his disciples.
21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
· He became one of the innermost circle (Mark 5:37; Matthew 17:1; 26:37; Mark 13:3). He was the disciple “whom Jesus loved.”
17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, “Sons of Thunder”;
· This spirit once and again broke out
35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.
36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?
37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.
49 Now John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us.”
50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him, for he who is not against us is on our side.”
51 Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, 52 and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. 53 But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. 54 And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?”
· At the betrayal of Jesus, he and Peter follow Christ afar off, while the others hastily flee ( & John 18:15).
15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another[a] disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. Footnotes: John 18:15 M-Text reads the other.
· At the trial he boldly follows Christ into the council chamber, and from there to the praetorium (18:16,19 “…that other disciple…”) and to the place of crucifixion ( & 19:26,27).
John 19:26-27
26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
· To him and Peter, Mary first conveys tidings of the resurrection ( & 20:2), and they are the first to go and see what her strange words mean.
1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.
· After the resurrection he and Peter again return to the Sea of Galilee, where the Lord reveals himself to them (21:1,7).
· We find Peter and John frequently together after this
Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. 2 And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple; 3 who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms.
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. 14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
· John apparently remained in Jerusalem as the leader of the church there (Acts 15:6; & Galatians 2:9). His subsequent history is unrecorded.
9 and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.
· He did not seem to be at Ephesus, however, at the time of Paul’s last visit (Acts 21:15-40). He appears to have retired to Ephesus, but at what time is unknown.
· He suffered under persecution, and was banished to Patmos (1:9). When he was eventually released, he apparently returned to Ephesus, where he died, probably about A.D. 98, having outlived all or nearly all his friends and companions, even those older than him. Some scholars, differ, believing that this John and the John of Ephesus, were not the same person.
· There are many interesting traditions concerning John during his residence at Ephesus, but these cannot be confirmed as historical truth.
John’s Gospel is Unique:
John has the only record of Jesus’s early Judean ministry (chapters 2-4).
It has more details on the last days of Jesus than the other Gospels (chapters 13-21).
Ninety percent of John’s Gospel is unique as compared to the Synoptics.
The name “Jesus” is used almost exclusively (239 of the 542 times in the Gospels are in John).
This Gospel also stresses Jesus’s humanity in that He got tired (4:6), wept (11:35), thirsted (19:28), suffered (v. 18), and died (v. 30).
Of the 46 names given Christ in the Gospels, John gives 33.

Key Words in the Gospel of John
A key word is a word or phrase that functions to unlock the meaning of a text. There are a number of key words in John's Gospel but the most important is believe [pisteuo]. John used the verb believe 98 times which is more than all the uses in the Synoptic Gospels combined. In fact if one does a search for the believe (using the root belie*) in the NASB, there are 292 hits in 266 verses. It is astounding that John's Gospel contains almost 1/3 of all the Biblical occurrences of believe (belief, believes). And so it is not surprising that John's purpose statement in Jn 20:31-note emphasizes that those who believe in Jesus will receive life in His Name. Given John's purpose and the predominance of the key word believe, it is not surprising that one often hears the statement (which of course would be difficult to objectively measure) that more souls have believed in Jesus through the reading of the Gospel of John than any other book in the Bible! Perhaps God will clarify this for us when we get to heaven.
Here are the Key Words in the Gospel of John (in the NASB 1995 version) - Note that the approximate number of uses of each word (searched so as to find plural forms, etc) is found in the Gospel of John is in parentheses. I have also included John's additional uses in his epistles and in the Revelation for completeness.Believe (pisteuo)(98x - Note there are 292 hits on "belie*" in the Bible-NASB) -
